The best time to distribute your seeds balls is in the fall of the year. Your seed balls will protect the seeds from birds and other seeds consumers. Plus, the fall and winter weather will help to prepare the seeds for germination in the Spring.
Here is the recipe we have used…
5 parts clay powder (from the craft store)
3 parts sifted compost- it doesn’t have to be that fine but the larger the particles the lumpier your balls will be
1 part seeds
1 to 2 parts water ( start with a little water and add as needed)
a large container for mixing
Mix the dry ingredients in container. Then add 1 part water and mix to check consistency by rolling some of the mixture in to a ball. If it crumbles add more water a little at a time until consistency is right for ball formation. Roll into 1/2 to 1 inch ball. Lay balls out on dry surface for 2 to 4 days until dry. They can be stored in a cool dry place for later use.
The Red River (between Oklahoma and Texas) and areas in North East Texas have excellent red clay material for seed balls. If you are traveling in those area, carry a bucket and collect some of the red clay dirt. Makes expectation seed balls.
