A Texas native, that should have been named Texas Buckthorn is actually called Carolina Buckthorn. A small deciduous tree with a moderate growth rate.

This tree will need irrigation to get established, but then is fairly drought tolerant. If you have heavy shade this tree will do well as a undercover tree. Don’t worry about Parker County alkaline or clay soils. This Texas native will give you nice fall color, with some seeds and fruit that will be enjoyed by wildlife. The shiny green leaves and bright red berries make this a real hit. The only issues for this tree are in the eye of the beholder, it could use some yearly pruning to keep the branch structure in check.
