Fraser’s Red Tip Photinias are susceptible to a deadly disease called Entomosporium Fungal Leaf Spot that has also been found on Indian Hawthorn and Loquat. This is why red tip photinias are not being promoted for landscapes.

  • Are Red Tip Photinias the Same as Fraser’s Photinias?

Yes, these are one and the same.

  • Fertilizing Red Tip Photinia or Nellie R Stevens Holly?

When should I fertilize my Red Tip Photinia and my Nellie R Stevens holly and what do I use?

Red Tip Photinia are not a recommend shrub for our area because of the endosporium fungal leaf spot due to the higher humidity in our county, and the Nellie R Stevens holly is a top quality plant for Parker County.

  • Is the Chinese Photinia a Good Shrub for Parker County?

The Chinese photinia Photinia semulata is an evergreen shrub with glossy green, waxy leaves that reaches about 10-15 feet in height and width and does well in sun or partial shade. It is very hardy and is not disease-prone like the Fraser red tip photinia. It makes a large shrub that is good for a privacy hedge. It has red berries and can be left as a shrub or pruned like a tree. 3-2015
